Pleasure Reading Favs: Students Discuss Must Reads and Don’t Reads

This space is a place for an indepth exploration of your favorite and not-so-favorite books. It is a place for students to find books they might be interested in reading and books they should avoid. When you describe the book you have read, remember you could be inspiring someone else to read it! Information such as who the author is, the reading level, similar books and plots and themes and characters in the book might be useful. DO NOT GIVE AWAY THE ENDING OR THE LESSONS THE BOOK HAS TO TEACH. These are things that good readers like to discover for themselves.

Special Note: If you find that someone else has written about a book you have read, feel free to enter into a discussion of the book with them. I would love to see some back and forth in- depth discussions on different texts. You can discuss things that puzzled you, characters you disagreed with, and what you might do differently had you written the book.

At the moment, my pleasure-reading book is “A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess. It is fantastic! At first it was very confusing and hard to understand, there are a lot of strange slang words. But after you continue to read, you understand more and more of the terms. This story has a lot of violence. ALOT! Every other page is “ultra-violence” as the narrator puts it. Its kinds of disturbing during some parts, but it makes for in great read. I suggest that everyone read it!

Well right now I am reading the book called “After The Rain” by Norma Fox Mazer. I think it’s a really good book. So far it’s about a girl named Rachel and she is in love and everyone thinks shes a snot and she doesn’t appreciate anything at all. But her grandfather makes her realize to appreciate what she has. Nobody can stand her grandfather because he’s really old and Rachel helps him alot and they get alittle closer and thats how she understands. The book is really good and if you guys get a chance to read it you’ll see how great this book really is. So don’t miss out on a great opportunity on reading this phenominal book. Thank you for your time.

I am sure most of you have heard of this book, it being the cause of conflict in the book that we read in class: “The Day They Came to Arrest the Book.” Well, I am currently reading “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and I have to admit, it is one of best books I have ever read even though I have not finished it yet. Huck is a boy who lives with a widow because his dad is an alcoholic and has no custody over him, but, Huck’s dad kidnaps him. Tired of the widow and his dad fighting over him, Huck, comes up with an ingenious plot to escape and he managed to make eeveryone think he is dead. Well, while hiding in an island he encounter’s one of the widow’s slaves, Jim, and together they have many adventures which you just have to read about- I don’t want to give it all away.

I enjoy reading books that are focused on alot of action or war related. Books of great fantansy and allowing the reader to try to imagine this world.
I don’t have a specific favorite book at the time, because I am trying out other books to read.

I have read many books in the last few months, but “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” was by far my favorite. I never wanted to put the book down and I looked foward to picking it up. This book is about a boy named Charlie who is a really good kid living an ordinary life. However, something was missing and this book goes through part of his High school experience dealing with mostly everything we all go through in High school, dealing with friends, love, and the joy of having friends who make you truly happy. If you read this book you’ll learn of many unique characters and you’ll love guessing what happens next.

At the moment as my pleasure reading book I am reading “For One More Day” by Mitch Albom. This book has me really interested I never mind just reading a couple of more pages. Sometimes it gets confusing, because it has a lot of flashbacks and stuff, but I try my best to stay concentrated so that I won’t be left off thinking like huh? I get easily distracted when reading a book but luckly with this book it doesnt happen. This book really has me thinking, because so far its about a man whos life seems pretty much meaningless to him and regrets not have taken advantage of the love his mother gave him when she was still alive now that he feels alone and wishes his mom could just come back. Hes gets to experience one more day with his mother. I plan on reading more to see whats going to end up happening, but I sure do recommend this book!

It sounds like all of you are finding some really interesting material to read. Michelle, it seems like your book ties into a lot of what we’ve been learning about: A meaningful life. Flashbacks (a form of thoughtshot).

Keep up the reading, it only gets better.

I like the adventure book because it keeps me entertaining. One of my favorite books is called “A series of Unfortunate event”. There are total of 13 volumes of this series and right now I only got to the 11th book. After I been reading for a while, I began to start like it and then find the book was very interesting.Especially that it’s had an illustrated in every of the begining of the chapter so I can follow and get the right ideas about it.

I am currently reading Eragon, which is a fantasy/adventure, oriented. Those themes take me in and I get absorbed into the book and I feel like I can see what ever is going on inside. Every time you read a book that you get into it’s very hard to put it down.

You’re quite correct, Josh. It is difficult to put good books down.
